COP31: A quick background

COP31 takes place in Antalya, TĂĽrkiye, from 9 to 20 November 2026, with TĂĽrkiye holding the COP Presidency and Australia leading negotiations. It is the first COP since countries submitted their latest national climate targets, and the Presidency's agenda puts electrification, industry, and technology at the center.

For carbon and commodity markets, the focus is on delivery: turning a largely written rulebook into real demand, investable supply, and claims that hold up.

Carbon credits and Article 6

Carbon credits have a clear role in credible climate strategies, for action beyond a company's value chain and for neutralizing residual emissions. The market is increasingly rewarding quality, with value rising even as volumes hold steady. The bottleneck is gradually shifting to readiness: host countries building the systems to authorize credits under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, and buyers building procurement processes that secure quality supply early.

Net-zero planning

Companies now have more ways to decarbonize than ever, but this comes with complexity. A credible plan cuts emissions in a company's own operations and value chain first, then uses certificates, carbon credits, and removals for the jobs each one is suited to. Buyers need to understand what each option does, what it counts for under the latest standards, and how to build a plan that holds up to an auditor, a CFO, and the next standards update.

Supply chains and lower-carbon commodities

The majority of most companies’ footprint sits in their supply chains, and cutting it means buying lower-carbon steel, cement, fuels, and chemicals. Supply is still scarce, carbon intensity varies widely between facilities, and the market infrastructure to price and verify it is still being built. Environmental attribute certificates (EACs) can help bridge the gap until physical supply scales. COP31's focus on industry, technology, and the built environment makes this one of the summit's most important conversations for corporate buyers and producers alike.
