Orphan Oil and Gas Well (OOG) Ratings Framework

Download Whitepaper

Orphaned and abandoned oil and gas well projects prevent methane emissions by locating, measuring, and permanently plugging leaking orphan wells, abandoned wells with no solvent responsible owner responsible for plugging them. These projects generate carbon credits by sealing wells so that methane which would otherwise escape to the atmosphere is permanently avoided. The premise is, as the plugged well produces no saleable output, the activity depends on carbon finance to proceed. The framework assesses the integrity of the measured baseline, the additionality of the plugging, the permanence of the plug, and the project's wider impact on communities and the environment.

This whitepaper contains a description of each component used in the assessment, scoring logic which breaks down the rules used to derive a quality score for each component, and data inputs where these are used in specific tests.
