About this paper:
Decomposition of organic matter in landfills generates landfill gas. Landfill gas is made up of around 50 percent methane gas, which has a 27-30x higher Global Warming Potential than CO2 over 100 years. Therefore, the release of this gas contributes to the warming of the atmosphere. There are Landfill Methane projects operating on the VCM that aim to reduce the amount of methane escaping to the atmosphere from landfills.
