What is a Methodology Profile?
A Methodology Profile is a comprehensive analysis that evaluates independent carbon offset methodologies against best practices and industry standards. They examine how effectively a methodology measures, reports, and verifies carbon reductions or removals, providing a clear picture of its strengths and potential risks.
For registries and methodology developers, these profiles serve several critical purposes:

Case Study: BioCarbon Standard
Background and Objectives
BioCarbon Standard is an independent greenhouse gas Program with projects spanning North America, South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. Issuances of Verified Carbon Credits under the BioCarbon Standard have grown rapidly, particularly from REDD+ activities, while the program continues to expand into new activity types and regions, including Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe. Project and credit information is recorded in the independently operated Global CarbonTrace Registry System.
As BioCarbon Standard has scaled its portfolio of methodologies, it sought independent, third-party assessments to help it understand how its Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) methodology (BCR0001) and its newly launched Improved Forest Management (IFM) and Avoided Planned Forest Conversion (APFC) methodology (BCR0010) measured up against market best practice - and to identify a clear roadmap for strengthening both ahead of anticipated CCP and CORSIA phase two review.

The Assessment Process
Sylvera assessed both BCR0001 (ARR) and BCR0010 (IFM & APFC) using the same rigorous framework:
1. Comprehensive Integrity Risk Assessment
Sylvera's Methodology Profiles assess four key risk pillars, which match Sylvera’s Ratings:
- Carbon accounting
- Additionality
- Permanence Safeguarding & co-benefits
Each Pillar is broken down into specific risk drivers that are scored according to a standardized scale, allowing for consistent comparison against best practices, and pinpointing where the two methodologies diverge despite drawing on the same underlying BioCarbon Standard tools. The assessment also identifies project-specific mitigative actions for addressing identified risks.
2. Market Acceptance Analysis
Beyond technical evaluation, Sylvera provided BioCarbon Standard with insights on each methodology's market positioning, based on:
- Public scrutiny and perception
- Existing accreditations (ICROA endorsement; CCP and CORSIA phase two status)
- Acceptance into domestic carbon schemes, including Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Ecuador, Perú, Egypt and other jurisdictions
3. Risk Driver Scoring Framework
Using a deterministic framework based on methodology design elements, Sylvera assigned risk scores that indicate potential issues projects might encounter when implementing only the required provisions of each methodology. These scores are benchmarked against market best practice for each project type, taking technical feasibility into account.
Key Findings
The Methodology Profiles highlighted a consistent set of strengths across both methodologies.
As BCR0001 and BCR0010 are supported by the same suite of program-level BioCarbon Standard tools - covering Baseline and Additionality, Leakage Management, Permanence and Risk Management, and Sustainable Development Safeguards and contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals. This provides both methodologies with a common and structured foundation.
Strong safeguarding and co-benefit provisions.
Safeguarding was the standout pillar in both assessments. Both methodologies mandate a no-net-harm commitment, Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) requirements where Indigenous Peoples or Local Communities are present, and demonstrated contributions to at least three Sustainable Development Goals at every monitoring period - assessed through BioCarbon Standard’s dedicated Sustainable Development Safeguards Tool and SDG Contribution Tool.
This reflects a program-wide commitment to ensuring project activities deliver real, measurable and lasting benefits for local communities and ecosystems alongside their mitigation outcomes.
Robust additionality testing.
Both methodologies performed strongly on Additionality. Their requirements are supported by mandatory common practice and regulatory surplus assessment conducted in accordance with the BioCarbon Standard’s Baseline and Additionality Tool. This gives project developers a clear, structured pathway for demonstrating that their activities go beyond business as usual.
A solid foundation for carbon accounting.
Both methodologies provide project developers with a structured and documented framework for quantifying emission reductions and removals. This includes defined requirements for relevant carbon pools, recognized quantification tools and procedures, baseline setting, and leakage management.
BioCarbon Cert continues to invest in strengthening these methodologies further, including exploring more dynamic approaches to baseline-setting as the program matures.
A credible and structured approach to permanence.
Both methodologies apply the BioCarbon Standard’s Permanence and Risk Management Tool, providing projects with a consistent framework to identifying and assessing internal, external, and natural risks to the durability of carbon outcomes and for setting a corresponding buffer pool contribution to safeguard against reversals.
Looking ahead.
Sylvera's assessment also identified forward-looking opportunities for the continued strengthening of the BioCarbon Standard methodology portfolio over time, which the team is already considering as part of its ongoing development roadmap.

Enhanced Market Credibility
With Sylvera's independent validation, BioCarbon Standard can demonstrate the integrity of both BCR0001 and BCR0010 to potential project developers, buyers, and its ongoing CCP and CORSIA phase two accreditation processes.
A Clear, Shared Roadmap for Improvement
Because both methodologies draw on the same underlying program-level tools, the assessments gave BioCarbon Standard a prioritized, standard-wide roadmap - rather than two disconnected sets of fixes - identifying where investment in improvements to those tools, including dynamic baselining, third-party reversal reporting and permanence periods, could raise the integrity of its entire methodology portfolio at once.
Increased Confidence for a New Methodology
For BCR0010 in particular - launched in August 2025 with no credits yet issued - the assessment gives project developers considering the methodology an early, independent view of its design risks before committing to it at scale.
